Eczema & Psoriasis Balm

When I started using essential oils one of my first massive wins was finding this balm. When I saw the relief it gave a family member (story to follow) that was it for me and the oils, there was no way I would ever go back to life without them.

I initially made up this mixture when I met my aunt-in-law and she mentioned that her husband’s skin was in a really bad way. He has always suffered from Eczema/Psoriasis and at the time his shins were nearly completely skinless. It sounded so sore I immediately started researching oils that could help.

I found that –

Frankincense (the King of Oils) was a great oil to use on the skin for many reasons. I often put a drop in my moisturiser and in fact I usually use my homemade version which has Frankie in it.

Lavender was calming and mildly analgeasic, antibacterial and antifungal. And with over 200 chemical compounds Lavender is a great all rounder oil.

Geranium is great for all skin conditions and is known as “The Poor Man’s Rose” because of its similar properties to Rose Oil which is great for the skin.

Melaleuca (Tea Tree Oil) is renowned for its cleansing and rejuvenating affect on the skin. Its a common germ killer so helps to do that for anything that is causing the skin to be irritated.

As a base I found that Coconut Oil is mildly antibacterial so that was going in and Aloe Vera leaf for its healing properties.

Why didn’t I use an Aloe Gel that you can buy in a bottle or tube? Well I did the second time I made a batch for myself and it didn’t have a great consistency. Maybe it was the brand I used I’m not sure but I have used my own Aloe leaves since then and it works like magic!

Here is the recipe –

100ml Coconut Oil (raw, virgin, cold pressed, organic)

2 good sized Aloe Vera leaves (I always have a few plants at home so I am sure they are not sprayed with pesticides or fertilizers or any other harmful toxins)

10 drops of Lavender Essential Oil

10 drops of Melaleuca Essential Oil

5 drops of Frankincense Essential Oil

5 drops of Geranium Essential Oil

Eczema & Psoriasis Balm

In a suitable bowl fillet the leaves of Aloe Vera so you are left with the sticky clear goo.

Add the coconut oil and whip up to a smooth consistency with a hand blender.

Once you are happy with it add the essential oils and briefly whip again to blend them in but not so much to create heat.

Voilà your potion is created! Apply to skin to relieve symptoms related to eczema and psoriasis or just apply any time to any skin.

I mix up the oils I use to create lovely aromas. Some that I love are Lemongrass, Lime, Wild Orange and Bergamot. Citrus oils are great for cleansing the skin but just be careful to apply them in the evening as they can be photosensitive which means they can react to sunlight.

Have fun creating and remember when using Essential Oils and other natural forms of healthcare to do your research! They are wonderful ways of caring for your health but some medications can react to other substances so check that out if you are taking any.

DIY Toothpaste

To fluoride or not to fluoride – that is the question.

It’s not easy, I get it.

Really, the best course of action you can take when you are faced with a decision like this is to do your research carefully from reputable sources (blogs are not often good sources) and make your decision based on that.

It is a huge area of debate and you can get bogged down defending your position whether you use fluoride or not, so in my opinion you just need to make your decision and then get on with it. Stop doubting yourself and your own intuition.

So if you have done your research and you are happy that fluoride is not for you, then you might like to follow this recipe to make your very own DIY Toothpaste.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon Baking Soda (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon Xylitol (crush before adding and taste test)
  • 3 tablespoons Calcium Powder
  • Essential Oils of choice – Peppermint, Spearmint, Myrrh, Clove, On Guard, Cinnamon
    • Spearmint is a great choice for kids as it is milder than Peppermint. Myrrh is also gentle and supports gum health. (Link to get your Oils)
  • Optional extras

Natural Sunscreen

Here in the West of Ireland we are frequently battered by Atlantic storms. Even when the rest of the country is basking in sun chances are that we are dealing with a rain front in off the Atlantic. So when the sun shines for us you will most likely see a lot of skin on show as everyone makes the most of those rays!

We know that even when it is cloudy it is important to protect ourselves with skin protection. What protection you use is entirely up to you whether by covering up or applying a protective lotion to exposed skin.

I don’t like to apply toxic products to my skin or that of my family so I spent some time researching natural sunscreens. It turns out a lot of natural products have a SPF and we can use these to create our own all-natural lotion. These include –

  • Shea Butter – SPF 4-6 (affiliate link)
  • Coconut Oil- SPF 4-6 (affiliate link)
  • Almond Oil- SPF around 5
  • Zinc Oxide SPF 2-20 depending on how much used
  • Red Raspberry Seed Oil SPF 25-50
  • Carrot Seed Oil –  SPF 35-40

When I made up our batch of sunscreen for this summer I used many of these ingredients as I have them for skin care anyway. I also added Doterra Helichrysum and Lavender Essential Oils to the lotion as some essential oils have a natural SPF.

Here is the recipe

Ingredients

  • ½ cup almond (or olive oil)
  • ¼ cup Coconut Oil (SPF 4)
  • ¼ cup Beeswax
  • 2 Tablespoons Zinc Oxide (Use a non-nano version that won’t be absorbed into the skin)
  • 1 teaspoon Carrot Seed Oi
  • 1 teaspoon Vitamin E oil
  • 2 tablespoons Shea Butter (SPF 4-5)
  • 10 drops Helichrysum Essential Oil (buy here)
  • 10 drops Lavender Essential Oil (buy here)

Directions

1. Use an old clean jar and add all the ingredients except the Zinc Oxide and the Essential Oils.

2. Put the jar into a double boiler with simmering water and let sit until all the ingredients have melted together.

3. Remove the jar from the double boiler and let cool for a few minutes before adding the Zinc Oxide and Essential Oils.

4. Mix well with an old spoon or a lollypop stick.

5. Place a tight lid on the jar and use within 6 months.

NOTE: This lotion is not fully waterproof and will need to be reapplied.

If you would like to get your essential oils at the same wholesale price I pay then you can enrol here or get in touch with me and I’ll explain all you need to know.

Have you made your own sunscreen? I’d love to hear from you!

Stress

Stress is a normal part of our physiology and helps us to survive. Back when we were living in caves, it was the hormones produced by the stress of being chased by a lion or having to get the harvest in before the storm that enabled us to survive. We wouldn’t be here today wtihout stress!

Nowadays stress is a much bigger part of our lives. Thanks to our way of life, we are under stress from the moment we open our eyes in the morning until we close them again at night. If you have young kids then it can go on throughout the night too!

Unless you move to a desert island or a monastery there really is no way of avoiding stress in modern life. Even those options come with their stresses! This means that we really need to learn how to manage our stress so that we can still live lives with optimum health.

When stress is felt in short bursts it can help us. We cram the night before an exam, we meet a deadline at work at the last minute all thanks to the adrenaline that comes from being under stress.

It’s when the stress is ongoing and we don’t get a break from it that we suffer with chronic stress and the illnesses that come with it. Stress can result in cancer, heart related health problems, anger, guilt, sadness, depression, hopelessness and more. It is critical that we learn to deal with stress so that we don’t get to these debilitating states of dis-ease.

There are many ways to ease stress. How you manage stress will be very personal to you. You need to find ways that fit with your life and what you like to do. There is no point going to play tennis to relieve stress if it’s something youe would rather not be doing!

Here is a list of ways to ease stress –

Get a massage

Take a walk

Meditate

Practice breathing exercises

Do yoga

Exercise

Talk to a good listener

Eat good food

Using Essential Oils for Acne

What is Acne?

“In 2015, acne was estimated to affect 633 million people globally, making it the 8th most common disease worldwide.”

Acne is when the skin becomes clogged with dead skin cells and excess oil causing blackheads, whiteheads, pimples and possibly scarring. It is commonly experienced by teenagers due to the increase of the hormones such as testosterone and can lead to emotional issues such as anxiety, low self-esteem and depression if not effectively dealt with.

The blemished often occur on the oil-producing parts of the body such as the face, neck, chest upper back and arms. It is not thought to be caused by dirt and research has shown that over-scrubbing the skin may make it worse.

Common Treatments

Acne usually lessens in adulthood but in about half of affected people it persists into their twenties and thirties and for some into their forties.  Common treatments include antibiotics, synthetic hormones, steroid creams as well as dietary and lifestyle changes.

While it is important to find something that works, the use of antibiotics and steroids can often lead to other issues such as weekend gut health, antibiotic resistance, candida overgrowth and the physical and emotional issues that come with them. This is where natural treatments and therapies are extremely beneficial as there are often no side effects involved.

Extra considerations

To get to the root cause of acne consider adding the following to your plan of action:

Detoxing – a gentle detox done regularly is a way to help the organs of elimination do their job more effectively. doTERRA’s GX Assist is a proprietary blend of Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® essential oils and caprylic acid that provides a natural cleanse for a healthy digestive system. If you don’t have a doTERRA account I highly recommend starting with the Cleanse & Restore Kit which gives you everything you need to detox and restore your body to balance.

Supplementing – these days we are not getting the vitamins and nutrients we need from our diets. Our soil is depleted and our food is produced in a fast and furious way that does not contribute to nutritious and wholesome food. The more research I do, the more convinced I am that supplementing my diet with high quality whole-food supplements (there is zero point taking cheap products) is crucial for good health.

doTERRA offer their Lifelong Vitality pack which contains Microplex MPV (vitamins & minerals), xEO Mega (omega oils) and Alpha CRS+ (cellular complex). This pack is available to doTERRA members or as part of the Cleanse & Restore Enrolment Kit, the Family Wellness Kit, Athlete’s Enrolment Kit (Daily Nutrient pack – doesn’t include Alpha CRS+), the Natural Solutions Kit, Every Oil Enrolment Kit and the Business Leader Enrolment Kit. See the Kit Flyer here.
